Amman TV Case study

Who are Amman TV?

One of the largest broadcasting companies in Jordan, Amman TV hosts both live and VOD content on it’s satellite television show for linear viewing as well as its own website for OTT content.

Starting off as a radio station before adding their own TV channel, their team now brings news and entertainment to thousands upon thousands of viewers all across Jordan as they work to diversify their content offering and scale their delivery platforms. Their business runs on sponsors and ad-supported business, making the quality of their content delivery business critical.

Challenge

Previously running just a radio station and linear tv channel, the team at Amman TV wanted more ways to put their content in front of their audience. They didn’t even have an OTT option available. Instead, their website just had a low quality webcam. But they were ready to build a reliable streaming service that delivers video at a consistently high quality across any device. However, the infrastructure in Jordan isn’t as advanced as some other Asian countries. “Jordan is infamous for having some of the worst latency in the world and the technology to fix this wasn’t ready yet on a national level,” says Khaled Khalifeh, Head of Technology at Amman TV. By building a fortified video streaming service, they can improve their reputation, branding, and opportunities as a content platform that partners with other networks.

Khaled then began his search for a solution that could not only help them operate across the entire country as a 24 hour service, but one that could prepare them for huge growth.

Solution

Khaled and his team came across Edge Intelligence, an AI solution for live content delivery that utilizes the open internet to look deeper than other solutions into why bottlenecking occurs and fixes it using peer-to-peer sharing. “The installation process was simple and the team made sure every need we had was accommodated,” says Khaled.

With his audience now consuming content on a variety of devices, networks and locations, Edge Intelligence acts as a traffic coordinator for Amman TV’s content, pulling from the right CDNs and then using intelligent distribution technology to reduce the load on those CDNs.

Result

Now Khaled’s audience all get to view content at 1080p, even those people in the most remote areas. Additionally, due to Edge Intelligence’s distribution technology, the load on CDNs has reduced by as much as 90% at times. That means lower production costs for the operations team as well as a higher quality of experience (QoE) for their audience.

“For me, the best thing is that our costs are down, meaning we have so much more room to grow.” For Khaled, there’s so much less stress involved with trying to maintain great QoE. He mainly interacts with Edge Intelligence through the website and only when traffic begins to spike.

The rest of the time, he has his operations team keeping an eye on the interface.

Future

Amman TV has plans to extensively expand their OTT offering with different shows on a variety of live channels covering genres like live cooking, social issues, and more.

Khaled always had his eyes on growing the Jordan-based broadcasting service and now he has a solid foundation in Edge Intelligence—a solution with infinite scalability that actually performs better when traffic is higher. He wants to build Amman TV’s reputation as one of the most reliable streaming services in the country.
